Music and movies and moms, oh my!

"What's your theme song?" That's the question that begins the relationship between Shay and Oliver in Orange Mint and Honey and "Sins of the Mother." (Go here for bonus scenes)

Shay gets to talking about her "spiritual fairy godmother" Nina Simone, whose birthday would be today if she were still alive. Luckily, her music is still with us.

I always have a soundtrack running in my head, even more than just one theme song. Right now, it includes the High Priestess of Soul, Nina Simone.

Since Lady Jill Scott stars in the movie version of my book, there's a whole lotta Jilly from Philly in my head to. Especially this one.

Finally, today is the anniversary of my mother's death. I had planned to write a whole post about the eerie coincidence of the movie being scheduled to premier today, but I find myself really too emotional to go there. But I will share with you this song that came out the year she died. It's been on my mind all week.

So tell me: what's your theme song?

I've yet to write a post on the anniversary of my mom's death either. And I very much consider "Golden" by theme song when I'm in a good mood. I also love "Lust for Life" by Iggy Pop when I'm feeling silly and "99 Problems" by Jay-Z when I'm in struggling with the writing demons.

Just under two and a half hours to go until your movie! Can't wait!

Carleen: I enjoyed watching Sins of the Mother last night. I am usually buried in a book on the couch on Sundays, but I happened to be watching Black History Month shows on televison and saw Sins.... I saw the book in Essence, but tossed the magazine before I wrote down the title. Nevertheless, I now have the title and will purchase it today. As they say, if the movie was good, then the book is AWESOME! I can't wait to delve in! And as for my theme song, "Wildflower" by New Birth.

Ernessa, 99 Problems is a good one to listen to while walking and thinking about my story!
