My new blog: White Readers Meet Black Authors

Thanks to a great conversation over at Blogging in Black, I've started a new blog: White Readers Meet Black Authors. I used the words "white readers" but please know everybody is invited. That's the whole point of the blog. It's my tongue-in-cheek way of bridging what seems to be a divide between some of my favorite authors and some of my favorite readers.

The first couple of posts are up. Please spread the link http://welcomewhitefolks.blogspot.com/ and drop me a comment over there from time to time.

What a great idea! Hey, maybe we ought to do book swap parties instead of regular Secret Santa or White Elephant or whatever kinds of gift exchanges this Christmas.

I look forward to reading your suggestions but I can truthfully say I've never weighed the color of the author's skin or the cover models in deciding to choose a book to read.

Lisa, Book swap would be great!

Travis, Glad to hear it. Neither have I.

Just stopped back in and for Travis, I just wanted to add that it's not so much that people care about author race, it's just that with the 80 gagillion great books out there, most of them written by people we've never heard of, it would be great to get some recommendations for books written by black authors especially from people we know, since we wouldn't otherwise know about them. Several months ago, there was a post (here I think) about the fact that most books by black authors end up in the African American section of the bookstore and for whatever reason, it never registered to me that there was one. Like you (probably), I just guessed books of a similar type would be together. Since they're not, and since the AA section has a really mixed bag of choices that range from stuff I'd never read to literary fiction, a few recommendations would be nice. I can't speak for Carleen's intent, but that's kind of where I am with this post.
